Text Box: This really is the water if you want some rod -bending action with carp up to 10lb in a quiet setting very different to most commercial carp fisheries. Fishery management policies have paid dividends in recent years, and the roach are also now well worth fishing for, and will feed in the cold weather when the carp slow down.
Before starting, some points to bear in mind. This is a water where juniors must be accompanied at all times on a one to one basis, juniors cannot fish alone.
No keepnets are permitted and only barbless hooks must be used. No guest or day tickets are available.
Please treat the fish with respect. Some of the fish are caught regularly, and are suffering from the poor quality of angling sometimes seen on this water (parrot mouths, missing scales etc). Ensure that the line you are using is strong enough, anything less than, say, 3lb will result in breakages. Play the fish gently, and use a landing net. Yanking them in will result in damage to the fish.
The Water
The lake is around 1 acre and set in a small area of woodland. It is quite shallow, with nowhere deeper than three feet. There is a small island with a number of trees growing through the water. One end of the lake disappears into a marshy wooded area, whilst the other is a small dam (The lake used to feed one of the many water mills in the area). The dam end is a little deeper than the marshy end. There are swims marked out on three sides of the lake.
Fishing
The number of trees in and around the water make the fishing difficult in some places. If you fish near a snag, again be sure that your gear  is substantial enough to stop a carp reaching safety and trailing line and hook behind him. These trees also seem to attract hanging decorations on a very regular basis. Please take care when casting, and using a lighter hook length will normally ensure that only the minimum amount of line and tackle is left in the event of a breakage. Most fish are caught in the margins so casting to the island is not normally necessary.
Any bait will work, but, in summer, bread and sweetcorn are hard to beat, as are red worms and luncheon meat. Its not normally necessary to use much in the way of groundbait, as the carp are quickly attracted to any loosefeed splashing in.
A great way to fish on a summer evening is with floating crust. On the pole, a short line to a hook, or on a rod with a small controller, and some free offerings will ensure some exciting sport.
